WbyW Reflections: Kicking Off with Liv Wynter

Sunday, 14th November 2021,

Delina Kitchen, Shepherd's Bush

For Word by Word’s November workshop, we were lucky enough to be back at the beautiful Delina’s Kitchen in Shepherds Bush. Nazareth, the owner of the space, was very welcoming as usual; providing us with hot drinks and delicious Ethiopian-style food.

Liv Wynter led a brilliant session; starting off with an introduction into their writing and art practice. We learnt about their biggest inspiration - Bertolt Brecht, who was a German theatre practitioner in the early 20th century. They also told us about creating a polemic - a strong verbal or written attack on someone or something. This is a technique they created in order to be able to step outside of themselves easily, to gain a new and different perspective when writing shows. They then took us through a few writing tasks, helping us to explore how we write and approach writing theatre. This included creating our own polemic which I found really interesting and fuelled my creativity.

Liv ended the workshop by asking us to write our own manifesto from the perspective of our created polemic character, and we had to share what we’d written. This was a daunting prospect but incredibly rewarding; hearing and sharing our work was very powerful. It was an engaging and thought provoking workshop - thank you Liv!

There are 7 more workshops to go in the Word By Word Presents series, led by a range of incredible professional writers.

No prior experience necessary. We are particularly welcoming people of colour, LGBTQ+ folk and other marginalised voices.

Tickets for our next workshop, Hiphop & Culture with Otis Mensah will take place on Sunday 14th December, online. Unlike so many of our workshops which are based in London, the Zoom-style aspect of this one is something we'd really like to embrace, when enabling people all over the UK to participate. Tickets are available to buy on a pay as you feel basis, and are available on our Eventbrite page.

Don’t forget to spread the word with anyone you know who might benefit from these workshops, we want to welcome as many people as possible to have a go.
