Music and Words with Lauren Kinsella

Join us at at the Bush Theatre (Shepherd's Bush) for our very first workshop of our 12-month series, Word by Word Presents. Led by award-winning contemporary vocalist, lyricist and composer Lauren Kinsella, this workshop will explore the relationship between music and words. The workshop will consist of a mixture of talking about where she finds inspiration, showing examples of her own work through performance and audio, as well as guided writing exercises with the group.

Lauren will bring the participants into her magical world of words and music, inspiring creative writing with a musical twist. This workshop is open to anyone who would like to have a go, aged 18 or over. No prior experience necessary. People of colour, LGBTQ+ and other marginalised voices to the fore.

Covid Health & Safety Measures
When attending the workshop, all participants must wear face coverings unless exempt for health reasons. As the facilitator, Lauren will be singing at certain times throughout the workshop. Hand sanitizer will be available. Further details will be sent out following registration.
Lauren Kinsella is an award winning JazzFM vocalist of the year known as having “embraced an entirely new conception of vocal improvisation, touching on various traditions but also connected to the avant garde” (The History of European Jazz)
Snowpoet, her band with multi-instrumentalist Chris Hyson released Wait For Me on Edition Records in 2021 and was hailed as “an album of mysterious, elusive beauty that will reveal more with every listening” (Cormac Larkin Irish Times). Their music regularly features on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6, BBC Radio 2 and RTE Lyric FM.

As a soloist, collaborator and band leader, she has performed worldwide at several European Festivals including Unerhört Jazz (Switzerland), InJazz (Netherlands), Cool Britannia (Vienna), Klaeng (Cologne), Down With Jazz (Ireland), Ankara International Music Festival (Istanbul), 12 Points (Porto), Dublin Literary Festival (Ireland), European Jazznights (Oslo), Jazzy Colours (Paris), Belfast Literary Festival (UK), Südtirol Jazz Festival (Italy), the Cardiff Poetry Festival (Wales), Galway Jazz Festival (Ireland), Songlines Encounters and The London Jazz Festival (UK).
Originally born in Dublin, Kinsella completed her masters with distinction at the Royal Academy of Music (2013). There she was awarded the Gershon Ellenbogen / Maccabaen Award and The Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize. She teaches at many of the UK’s leading conservatories including Leeds College of Music, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and The Royal Academy of Music, London.
